TRANSFUSE is out!

The TRANSFUSE trial has just been published in the New England Journal of Medicine – a huge congratulations to all the authors from the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group, including Jamie Cooper, Alistair Nicholl, and Dash Gantner from our Alfred ICU / INTENSIVE team.

This methodologically rigorous trial was a huge undertaking and involved about 5000 patients from 59 sites in 5 countries. It compared the effect of transfusing the freshest available red cells with that of standard-issue (oldest available) red cells high-risk critically ill patients… which has important implications for the supply and storage of blood for transfusion.

Read the article to see what it showed… or just skim through the Twitter responses if you’re lazy 😉
